| 4 September 2006 The 19-year-old Australian was awarded the prestigious title after receiving 59% of the votes posted by fans of endurance racing via the Championship’s official website.
"I just want to thank everyone who voted for me, and congratulations to Jaroslav in second place,“ commented Alex on the WEC website on learning that he had won the award. "I’m proud to be an Australian in the World Endurance Championship but I have a European background with my grandfather being a Czechoslovakian from Prague so thanks to all my European supporters as well.“ Alex secured the title from Jaroslav Cerny who gained 36% of the 1,000 votes cast with Didier Hendrickx, Simone Cortese and Nicolas Pirot as runners-up. Alex, the younger brother of Damian who is a member of the Phase One team, rides for the Kawasaki Diablo 666 alongside Englishman James Hutchins and Marko Rohtlaan of Estonia. "Many congratulations to Alex for wining Rookie of the Year,“ commented Miles Hutchins, Team Principal at Diablo 666. "Alex has ridden really well this year for Diablo 666 and improved hugely as the season has progressed to become a real asset to the team.“ The UK-based Diablo 666 is currently sixth in the World Endurance Championship rankings but has the final race of the season, the Bol D’Or 24 Hours, which takes place at France’s reknown circuit, Magny Cours, over the weekend of September 16 & 17, to improve its final standing.
